Lai Qingde leads Taiwan chief election

The head of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Lai Qingde, is currently gaining the most votes in the election of the head of the island’s administration, Western media report. The party represented by the likely winner advocates the declaration of Taiwan’s independence from the PRC.

On Saturday in Taiwan, polling stations closed at 16:00 local time (11:00 Moscow time). 19.5 million people have the right to vote. So far, Lai Qingde has secured the support of about 3 million votes.

He is opposed by Hou Yu from the Kuomintang and Ke Wenzhe, the founder of the Taiwan People’s Party. Both political movements advocate the development, within certain limits, of relations with mainland China and their normalization.

It is known that paper ballots are counted manually. The results are expected to be announced today.
