Izvestia: St. Petersburg will be protected by new divisions due to NATO expansion
New divisions will be created to defend St. Petersburg and North-West Russia. This was reported by the Russian Ministry of Defense.
The Leningrad Military District will be created to ensure security in the region. The district will include motorized rifle divisions, and perhaps a tank division will also be deployed. This information is still being clarified. One of the units will be deployed on the Karelian Isthmus to guarantee the security of the northern capital.
The decision was made after Finland joined NATO and the expected accession of Sweden to the alliance.
As the newspaper writes, the Leningrad Military District being created will protect the region from threats from the Baltic states, Finland, Sweden and Norway.
Military expert Dmitry Boltenkov believes that Russia used to have normal relations with these countries, but they decided to spoil them, and Russia is obliged to respond.
The Leningrad Military District already existed before 2010, but was merged with the Moscow Military District into the Western District. Now they have decided to recreate it as the Leningrad Military District, the formation of which will be completed by March 1, 2022.
