Israeli Merkava tanks were equipped with “barbecues” when there was no fish

The most high-tech armored vehicles did not have protection against drones
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) quickly responded to new threats associated with the massive use of kamikaze drones after at least one Merkava tank was hit by a drone on October 7. In just ten days, all Israeli tanks received, in addition to the world’s most advanced means of active and passive protection, welded-on metal visors. In our troops, such welded grates were called “barbecues.”
Before the war that began on October 7, the Israeli army neglected what it considered primitive defenses. But after drones from Hamas militants hit several armored vehicles on the very first day of the war, the IDF command took urgent measures. One tank was destroyed by an anti-tank grenade dropped by a Hamas drone.
Today, social networks are full of videos and photos in which welded metal gratings can be seen above the turrets of Israeli Merkava tanks on the border with the Gaza Strip. These are the so-called anti-drone visors.
Military observer Alexander Kharchenko noted in this regard that such “modernization” means that “Israel is preparing for a ground operation in the Gaza Strip.”
Experts noted that all the “visors” are of the same type, that is, they were installed industrially. Just like in Russia, where the experience of the Northern Military District long ago made us remember these means of protecting armored vehicles. So Russian “know-how” turned out to be in demand in Israel.
True, as the authors of the Military Informant channel noted, so far the Israelis have only protected tanks. But in vain. Other armored vehicles may also be damaged by Hamas drones.
The speed of the IDF’s reaction to the discovered vulnerability of tanks during an attack from above is surprising, concludes the author of the “Military Correspondents of the Russian Spring” channel.
