The Iraqi Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the assault and arson of the Swedish embassy in Baghdad on the night of 20 July. The statement of the department, published in the Telegram channel, emphasizes that this act is contrary to diplomatic norms and is a threat to the security of diplomatic missions.
The Government of Iraq has ordered an urgent investigation into this incident and the implementation of all necessary security measures. Earlier in the day, it was reported that protesters in Baghdad seized and set fire to the building of the Swedish embassy. According to the source, the embassy staff were not injured.
The demonstrations came after Stockholm’s permission to hold an event that included the burning of a Koran and an Iraqi flag outside that country’s embassy. Since the beginning of 2023, several cases of Koran burning have been recorded in Sweden. The last of these occurred on the day of the Muslim holiday Eid al-Adha near a mosque in Stockholm on June 28.
