Iran’s judiciary says it will crack down hard on protesters

Iran’s courts will deal harshly with anyone who causes unrest or commits crimes during a wave of anti-government protests, the judiciary said Tuesday, signaling that the authorities intend to impose harsh sentences on convicted demonstrators.
Demonstrations, one of the biggest problems for Iran’s clerical leaders since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, have been going on for eight weeks despite tight security measures and harsh warnings from security forces.
According to a video posted on social media, authorities deployed a police force on horseback to the streets of Tehran to quell the demonstrations.
In Tehran province alone, more than 1,000 people have been charged in connection with what the government calls “riots.”
“Now the public, even the protesters who do not support the riots, are demanding the judiciary and security agencies to deal decisively, deterrently and legally with the few people who caused the riots,” said Masoud Setayoshi, a spokesman for the judiciary.
Anti-government demonstrations erupted in September following the death of a Kurdish woman, Mahsa Amini, who was detained by morale police for allegedly ignoring the Islamic Republic’s strict dress code for women.
