The state visit of the Iranian president, which began on February 15, was the first such event in 20 years, although he had previously met with Chinese President Xi Jinping, IRNA reports. “China supports Iran in protecting its national sovereignty and countering unilateral actions and intimidation,” China Central Television quoted Xi on its website as saying.
Xi also noted that China supports Iran and promotes “an early and proper resolution of the Iranian nuclear issue.” Beijing participated in the conclusion of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action agreement, which was suspended due to the withdrawal of the United States in 2018, and calls on all parties to work to restore it as soon as possible. China intends to expand coordination with Iran within the framework of international organizations, including the UN and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, which it officially joined in 2022.
