Iran announced the signing of a contract for the purchase of fighters from Russia

The purchase of Russian Su-35 fighter jets is “technically approved by Iran,” the Iranian news agency IRNA reported March 11, citing the country’s permanent mission to the UN. The statement of the permanent mission says that Iran has asked a number of countries to explore the possibility of selling fighter jets to Iran, and Russia has announced that it is ready to sell them. According to the permanent mission, after October 2020, in accordance with the nuclear deal agreement (JCPOA), the arms embargo against Tehran is not in effect and Iran “finally agreed to their [Су-35] purchase.” The number of vehicles and the timing of their delivery are secret, the report says.
On January 22, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in response to a question about the supply of Su-35s to Iran that the Kremlin does not comment on issues of military-technical cooperation. A representative of Rosoboronexport declined to comment on whether the contract was signed with Iran.
