IOC extends sanctions against Russian and Belarusian athletes

The summit of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) upheld the sanctions against athletes from the Russian Federation and Belarus. About it says in an IOC statement.
“The vast majority of participants agreed that sanctions against the Russian and Belarusian governments responsible for flagrant violations of the Olympic Truce and the Olympic Charter must remain in place,” the statement said.
The IOC clarified that the extension of sanctions includes a ban on international sporting events in Russia and Belarus, as well as the refusal of flags, anthems and other state symbols of the two countries in competitions.
In February 2022, against the backdrop of a special operation in Ukraine, the IOC recommended that international federations remove Russian and Belarusian athletes from competitions. Most federations supported the initiative.
At the same time, on December 7, the head of the IOC, Thomas Bach informedthat French President Emmanuel Macron insists on the participation of all countries in the 2024 Olympic Games, which will be held in Paris. According to him, the French leader noted that sport should not be politicized, and called for the admission of representatives of even those countries that “are at war” to the games.
The 2024 Summer Olympics will take place in Paris from July 26 to August 11. At the previous 2020 Tokyo Games, the Russians competed under a neutral flag due to WADA sanctions against the Russian Federation. Under the flag of the Russian Olympic Committee, athletes also participated in the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing.
