Consumer prices in the United States at the end of March increased by 3.5% in annual terms. In February, growth was 3.2%. On a monthly basis, prices increased by 0.4%, the same as last month, the US Department of Labor reported.
As Reuters reports, inflation for the month exceeded the forecast of analysts, who expected prices to rise by 0.3%. Annual inflation was expected at 3.7%. As the Associated Press notes, the drivers were rising gasoline prices, rising rents and rising car insurance prices. The agency believes that inflation will force the Federal Reserve System (Fed) to think about when and by how much to cut interest rates this year.
The US Federal Reserve kept the rate at 5.25–5.5% in March. At the same time, the regulator revised its assessment of the state of the economy, pointing to strong growth in the number of jobs, which prevents the cooling of the labor market. The US GDP growth estimate for this year was also raised by half – from 1.4% to 2.1%.
About the Fed’s forecast – in the material “Kommersant” “The rate will wait until September”.
