Inflation in Germany in May amounted to 6.1% in annual terms. Such preliminary data today, May 31, published by the Federal Statistical Office. This is the lowest inflation rate in more than a year. Price growth has been slowing down for more than a month: for example, in February, inflation in annual terms amounted to 8.7%, in March – 7.4%, in April – 7.2%.
Analysts polled by Reuters had expected inflation to hit 6.5% in May. In addition, for the first time since the beginning of the year, prices slightly decreased compared to the previous month – by 0.1%.
Food prices in May rose by 14.9% in annual terms – against 17.2% in April. Growth in energy prices slowed down significantly: they increased by 2.6% against growth by 6.8% in April. Goods in general rose in price by 7.7%, services – by 4.5%.
The growth of consumer prices is also slowing down in other EU countries: for example, data were published today that inflation in France in May amounted to 6% in annual terms against 6.9% in April. According to analysts polled by Reuters, inflation in the euro area as a whole will slow down from 7% in April to 6.3% in May.
