India will launch a diplomatic campaign to return thousands of artifacts from the UK, including the Kohinoor diamond owned by Indian rulers. The fulfillment of this requirement should be a “retribution” for the British colonial past, writes The Telegraph, citing sources.
The campaign will be Britain’s largest repatriation demand, officials in New Delhi say, eclipsing Greece’s demand for the return of the Parthenon sculptures (Elgin marbles) held in London.
India’s ministerial and diplomatic staff will be mobilized to secure the return of potentially thousands of artifacts taken to the UK during the empire.
The return of historical artifacts to India is initiated by the country’s authorities, it is one of the priorities of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said the secretary of the Indian Ministry of Culture, Govind Mohan, whose unit, the Archaeological Survey of India, is leading the effort to return the exported jewelry. The campaign is expected to start this year.
The 105 carat Kohinoor Diamond was owned by India and is currently in the UK. The diamond left India on April 6, 1850, and in 1937 it was transferred to the crown of Queen Elizabeth.
