India plans to radically modernize Russian Su-30MKI fighters

The Indian state defense company Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is preparing for a large-scale project to modernize the fleet of Su-30MKI aircraft of the Indian Air Force, reports the defense portal Indian Defense Research Wing.

The implementation of the program will begin in the 2026-27 financial year, according to plans, it will be an important step for India to expand the capabilities of its air force.

HAL is reportedly planning a radical transformation of the Su-30MKI. Thus, they will receive a modernized cabin with new generation touchscreen widescreen displays. This update promises to provide pilots with improved situational awareness, improved data visualization and greater control over aircraft systems.

The aircraft will also receive an Indian-developed active electronically scanned array radar system, which will enhance its ability to detect and track targets, improve targeting accuracy and effectiveness in electronic warfare environments.

In addition, the modernization includes equipping the aircraft with an upgraded flight control computer, as well as more advanced ammunition and electronic countermeasures.

The material says that the plan needs to receive approval from the Ministry of Defense and the Indian Air Force. If approved, it is planned to modernize approximately 20-25 aircraft per year. Thus, the entire Indian Su-30MKI fleet will be modernized by 2034.
