In Yerevan, protesters blocked the Russian Embassy amid the escalation in Nagorno-Karabakh, told in the diplomatic mission itself in the comments of Sputnik Armenia.
“We paid attention to the calls spread on the Internet to hold a protest action near the building of the Russian Embassy in Armenia. After their appearance, the diplomatic mission was blocked, first partially, and then completely,” the embassy said.
The work of the diplomatic mission, they noted, is impossible in such conditions; a note was sent to the Armenian Foreign Ministry with a request to take measures to restore the work of the embassy in accordance with the Vienna Convention.
On September 19, Azerbaijan announced the start of “anti-terrorist measures” in Nagorno-Karabakh to “restorate the constitutional order” of the republic. Armenia called Azerbaijan’s actions “large-scale aggression.”
In Yerevan, in the afternoon, protesters began to gather and block the entrances to Republic Square, where the government building is located. The protesters called on Russia to take measures to resolve the situation in Karabakh. Later it became known about collisions between protesters and law enforcement officials, as local media noted, demonstrators tried to break through the police cordon and enter the government building. The police used special means to disperse the crowd.
The Investigative Committee of Armenia, in turn, reported on the initiation of several criminal cases based on calls for violence and the overthrow of the constitutional order in the republic that were made during the protests.
