A bill on punishment for humiliation on linguistic grounds has been introduced to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. The document appeared on the parliament website.
In the explanatory note, the authors emphasized that citizens can use any language in everyday life and in those areas that are not regulated by law.
“The events of recent days show that cases of discriminatory treatment of citizens on the basis of language are increasingly occurring,” the authors stated.
Prior to this, the Ukrainian parliament adopted a bill on national minorities, which aims to fulfill the requirements of the European Commission and at the same time tightens restrictions on the use of the Russian language in the country. According to it, for national minorities whose languages are official in the European Union, the bill provides the opportunity to receive education and distribute election campaign materials in their native language.
