Russian authorities are discussing the creation of a new department that will be responsible for interethnic and migration policy, they report “Vedomosti” with reference to sources. According to them, the new department will report directly to the president.

According to the publication, the structure of the department is still being worked out. It is possible that it will combine the powers that the Federal Agency for National Affairs and the Main Directorate for Migration Issues of the Ministry of Internal Affairs currently have. According to one of the newspaper’s interlocutors, the new department will deal with all issues related to migration and interethnic relations.

The topic of the new structure may be discussed at a meeting of the Human Rights Council with the participation of the president on April 24. Another Vedomosti source believes that all talk about creating a department is “premature until May.”

The tightening of migration policy in the Russian Federation began to be discussed after the terrorist attack in the Crocus City Hall near Moscow on March 22. As a result, 144 people were killed and more than 500 were injured. Four alleged terrorists were arrested; they are citizens of Tajikistan. The Ministry of Labor of Tajikistan against this background recorded the outflow of migrants from the Russian Federation, as well as cases of oppression of Tajiks in the country “at the everyday level.”
