In the Netherlands, the court refused to evict squatters from Volozh's house

A court in the Netherlands refused to evict the squatters who occupied the home of Yandex founder Arkady Volozh in Amsterdam at the end of October, reports NRC and NL Times. During the preliminary hearing, the court ruled that there were no sufficient grounds for the forced eviction of the squatters.

Volozh filed a lawsuit after his house in Amsterdam, which was bought for personal use, as reported by the entrepreneur’s lawyers, was occupied by squatters – persons who do not have a legal right to use the premises, but nevertheless occupy it. According to Volozh himself, since 2020, a major overhaul has been carried out in this building, which is the legal basis for the house to be empty.

However, according to the judge, the sanctioned property should not increase in value, but a major overhaul can lead to this and, as a result, to Volozh’s “capital growth”, which is prohibited by sanctions. It is clarified that repairs can be allowed by decision of the Ministry of Finance if the department makes an exception for someone from the EU sanctions list, but the case of Volozh was not like that, the court stressed.

Volozh’s lawyers argued that the businessman intends to periodically stay with his family in this house. However, the court questioned this argument, since sanctions would prevent the businessman from visiting the Netherlands. As a result, the court agreed with the statement of the squatters, who believe that Volozh intends to rent out the house.

According to NRC, Volozh bought a house in Amsterdam in 2018, paying about 3.4 million euros for it. The squatters occupied the premises at the end of October. They are protesting that the rights of billionaires who view cities in terms of investment attractiveness are better protected than the rights of “vulnerable people” who want to have a roof over their heads.

Volozh resigned as CEO of Yandex and resigned from the board of directors in early June, after the EU imposed personal sanctions on him. Later, the company said that Volozh would appeal the decision of the European Union to include him in the sanctions list in court.
