The Kaliningrad region is already protected from the Polish border, so nothing will change for the Russian region with the construction of barrier structures by Poland, Dmitry Lyskov, press secretary of the government of the Kaliningrad region, told Vedomosti.

“From our side, the fence – in the form of a fence on the border – has been standing for a long time, it functions perfectly and “protects” the Polish border. The fence is functional in the same way – no matter which side it is on. Therefore, the fact that the Poles have now decided to build their fence opposite ours cannot be called anything other than populism,” he said. According to Lyskov, the Polish side has been discussing the project of barrier structures for a long time, so it did not come as a surprise to the regional authorities.

Edition Wprost with reference to the Polish Minister of the Interior Mariusz Kaminski reported April 18 that Poland began to build an electronic fence on the border with the Kaliningrad region of Russia. According to Kaminski, the barrier will be equipped with cameras and motion sensors. It is planned to finish its construction in the fall.

The decision to build this fence is meaningless, says Nikolai Mezhevich, a professor at the St. Petersburg State University of Economics. The Kaliningrad region is an isolated territory, there are no illegal migrants there, and for the Kaliningraders themselves, moving across the border is already difficult today, and the Poles know this, he explained to Vedomosti. This is a symbolic decision of the Polish authorities, focused on the domestic voter, the expert added.

About plans to build an electronic barrier on the border with the Kaliningrad region of the Polish authorities announced in February. It will cover almost 200 km of the land border.
