Estonian authorities believe that the damage to the telecommunications cable in the Baltic Sea between Sweden and Estonia is related to damage to the Balticconnector gas pipeline and the cable between Estonia and Finland. This was stated by the Minister of Civil Defense of Sweden, Karl-Oskar Bohlin.
“It has been confirmed that the cable [между Швецией и Эстонией] was damaged as a result of external force or interference,” he noted (quote according to Reuters).
At the same time, Bolin did not specify what exactly connects the damage to the two cables and the Balticconnector.
On October 8, Finnish Gasgrid reported a drop in pressure in the Balticconnector at night. According to the company, the cause could be a leak. On October 11, the Finnish government’s Foreign and Security Policy Committee reported that the damage could have been caused by “external activities.” On the night of October 8th also was damaged submarine cable between Finland and Estonia, communications company Elisa said.
About the damage to the undersea telecommunications cable between Sweden and Estonia on October 17 reported Bolin. He clarified that the cable was damaged at the same time as the gas pipeline, but this did not affect its operation. Finnish investigators previously reported that vessels belonging to Russia and China were spotted in the area of the October 8 incident. At Rosatom refuted speculation about the alleged involvement of the nuclear container ship Sevmorput in the accident.
