Russia is working on creating an attack underwater drone with a payload of up to 5 kg, TASS reported, citing a source in the military-industrial complex. According to the agency’s interlocutor, the underwater drone will be used during mine clearance operations.
He also said that the underwater drone will be equipped with four engines and its range will be up to 1 km. According to a TASS source, the drone will be tested in February.
“Another application of the device is the delivery of all kinds of payloads. Today, military personnel are stationed near the Dnieper, so they need equipment that is capable of hitting enemy targets, an attack underwater drone,” said the agency’s interlocutor.
According to him, in mine clearance operations the drone will be used to monitor hydraulic structures at depths of up to 30 m. “Accordingly, if a message comes about a mined bridge support, there is no need to call a group of divers, a submersible drone will be used for this,” the interlocutor noted.
In March 2023, Andrei Bratenkov, executive director of the Spectr Engineering design bureau, reported that Russia had developed a remote-controlled underwater vehicle “Scat”, designed for monitoring, mine clearance and reconnaissance. Then he stated that the Skat weighs 4.7 kg and will be used to lift objects from depths of up to 100 meters.
