The Riga City Council decided to rename the streets of Pushkin, Lermontov, Turgenev and Moscow

The Riga City Council decided to rename a Moscow street, as well as streets in honor of Russian writers and scientists. Thus, “the names of the streets of Moscow, Lomonosov, Pushkin, Gogol, Lermontov and Turgenev” will be changed.

Moscow Street is the longest in Riga, its length is more than 16 kilometers. It will be renamed Latgale Street, the name it bore from 1938 to 1940. Meanwhile, the street was named in honor of Moscow back in 1859.

Pushkin Street will be named after the Latvian linguist Karl Mühlenbach, Turgenev Street – in honor of the artist Vilhelm Purvitis, Lermontov Street will be renamed the street of the poet Vilis Pludonis, Gogol Street – the street of the journalist Emilia Benjamin, Lomonosov Street will become the street of Valeria Seile – the first woman in the Latvian government.

According to the vice-mayor of Riga, Edwards Ratnieks, the existence of Moscow Street in Riga “undermines the national position and statehood” of Latvia.
