The National Energy Regulatory Agency (NARE) of Moldova fined the company Moldovatransgaz, a subsidiary of Moldovagaz controlled by Gazprom. The fine amounted to 34 million lei ($1.9 million at the exchange rate as of September 15), reported press service of the department.
“NARE has imposed financial sanctions on the operator of the natural gas transportation system <...> for failure to comply with legal obligations related to ensuring its independence in relation to <...> “Moldovagaz,” ANRE clarified.
Moldovatransgaz was obliged to separate from the blue fuel supply company as part of the third energy package of the European Union. The operator needs to separate supplies, transportation and distribution in the gas market. According to ANRE’s decision, Moldovatransgaz should come under state control.
In the fall of 2022 “Gazprom” reported that Moldovagaz’s debt for the supplied fuel reached $433 million. Taking into account the late payments, the Moldovan company needs to pay $709 million to the Russian corporation.
The Moldovan government conducted its own audit and stated that it could only pay Gazprom $8.6 million of the total debt. The Russian corporation was offered to simply write off the rest of the amount.
The results of the audit of Moldovagaz’s debt to Gazprom by the Cabinet of Ministers of the former Soviet republic caused bewilderment among the chairman of the board of the Moldovan company, Vadim Cheban. According to him, the debt is $46 million.
