The leader of the Lithuanian Social Democrats criticized the Education Minister’s call to close Russian schools

The leader of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) of Lithuania, Vilija Blinkeviciute, said that the calls of the Lithuanian authorities to close Russian schools in the country are a mistake.

Earlier, the Minister of Education, Science and Sports Gintautas Jakstas made a proposal to close Russian educational institutions as disloyal against the backdrop of Russia’s actions in Ukraine in the republic.

As Blinkevičiūtė reported, such a statement on the part of the minister is a rash step. The majority of the country’s population believes that Yakshtasa made a rash mistake.

She recalled that in September 2023, the Lithuanian Ministry of Education promised not to introduce any changes to the system of schools for national minorities. And the minister’s current statements contradict statements made six months ago.

The Department of National Minorities under the Government of Lithuania, the Speaker of Parliament Victoria Cmilyte-Nielsen, the head of the Ministry of Justice Evelina Dobrovolska and the school community are in solidarity with Blinkevichiute on this issue.
