Poland in Ukraine will be considered a close friend until the end of hostilities, then the countries will compete, Mikhail Podolyak, adviser to the head of the office of the President of Ukraine, said on the air of the Dom TV channel.
“Our closest partner and closest friend today is Poland. And, in principle, it will be so until the end of the war. After the end, of course, we will have competitive relations, of course, we will compete for certain markets, consumer markets, and so on,” said he (TASS quote).
According to Podolyak, Kyiv will “be on pro-Ukrainian positions” and “toughly” defend its interests. The contradictions that arose between the two countries, he called a discussion, it “will not lead to any breaks.”
The aggravation of relations between Poland and Ukraine took place against the backdrop of Warsaw’s policy to protect the agricultural market. Earlier, the European Commission (EC) imposed an embargo on the supply of four types of grains and oilseeds from Ukraine to several Eastern European countries, including Poland, until September 15. On July 19, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said that if the EC does not extend the restriction, then Poland will independently close the border for such goods.
On July 31, the Office of the President of Poland said in an interview that Kyiv “should begin to appreciate the role that Poland has played for Ukraine in recent months and years.” After that, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine called Ambassador to Kyiv Bartosz Cichocki and stressed that statements about the alleged ingratitude of Ukrainians for helping Poland “do not correspond to reality and are unacceptable.”
