The president of the Kalashnikov concern, Alan Lushnikov, found it possible to increase the main caliber of cartridges for army machine guns from 5.45 mm. He admitted that a rifle complex with an updated caliber may appear in the course of work on the new Legionnaire equipment.
“The whole world is working on new ballistic solutions. As you know, the United States has already signed a contract for the supply of a new rifle complex, and there the bullet caliber is not 5.56 mm, but 6.8 mm. Of course, we are also looking in this direction. It is impossible to rule out an increase in caliber from 5.45 mm to a larger one, because today there are completely different solutions for personal protection, different technologies. We will definitely work in this direction,” said the head of the concern (quoted by RIA Novosti).
In 2019, the Ministry of Defense released a report “Main Directions for the Development of the Rocket and Artillery Weapons System of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation”. It spoke of the need to abandon the 5.45 mm caliber due to weak penetrating power and switch to the 7.62 mm caliber. The 5.45 mm caliber was developed in the early 1970s and adopted by the Russian army in 1974.
The US began switching to the new caliber in 2017 as part of the Next Generation Squad program. In April, the American command concluded contract for the supply of machine guns, rifles and cartridges of a new generation with the German company Sig Sauer In.
