German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has called on democrats to unite against “fanatics with fantasies of assimilation” after it emerged that politicians from the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party were discussing a “master plan” for mass deportations if the party came to power.

According to The Guardian, a meeting of the far right with the participation of members of the ADG, the head of the identity movement and neo-Nazi activists took place back in November last year in a country hotel on the outskirts of Potsdam.

According to journalism outlet Correctiv, which first published the story, discussions have been dominated by the concept of “re-emigration” – the forced return of migrants, presumably including those with German citizenship, to their countries of origin through mass deportations.

The invitations, seen by Correctiv and The Guardian, described the meeting as an opportunity to present “the overall vision in the sense of a master plan.” Ideas discussed at the meeting reportedly included deportations to areas of North Africa where up to 2 million people could be housed.

Scholz strongly condemned the alleged plans on Thursday. “We stand up for everyone, no matter their background, skin color or how inconvenient someone is to bigots with fantasies of assimilation,” he wrote on social media.

“Learning from history is more than just words,” the German chancellor added, in what appeared to be a reference to the Nazi dictatorship, which made racial ideology, ostracism and deportation of Jews, Gypsies and Sinti, sexual minorities and many others as the cornerstone of their policies. Scholz continued: “The Democrats must stick together.”

The ADF, buoyed in part by discontent over immigration, is top in the polls in all five of Germany’s eastern states, three of which are expected to hold elections later this year. While the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the liberal, pro-business Free Democratic Party (FDP) have for now ruled out the possibility of entering into a coalition with the party, the ADC’s presence at the meeting suggests a far-right organization targeting political benefits in the near future.

AfD members met with Martin Sellner, a key figure in the pan-European New Right, who was permanently banned from entering the UK in 2019 due to his extremist views.

In a statement sent to The Guardian, Sellner confirmed he had introduced the idea of ​​“re-migration” at the meeting, but said it was not about a “secret master plan” and his comments had been abbreviated and taken out of context.

During the meeting, Sellner said, he “made it clear that no distinction could be made between different types of citizens.” [Германии] – that there should be no second-class citizens – and that all measures for re-emigration must be legal.”

As news of the meeting sparked outrage across Germany, Maximilian Kra, the ADC’s leading candidate in June’s European Parliament elections, vowed to address the large number of migrants arriving in the country in 2022, more than 40% of whom were reportedly from Ukraine.

“In 2022, 2.7 million people migrated to Germany,” he tweeted. “This is destroying our country! Only the ADG will stop this and organize their return.”
