The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) began to carry out artillery strikes along the coastline of Energodar, including on the territory of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, representatives of the pro-Russian military-civilian administration (VGA) of the Zaporozhye region reported, transmits RIA Novosti agency.

It is specified that in just a day 23 strikes were recorded near the ZNPP. At the same time, information about the victims has not yet been received.

Earlier, the head of the VGA, Vladimir Rogov, announced the arrest of an armed group of saboteurs who were preparing a terrorist attack at the ZNPP. They seized machine guns, grenade launchers and explosive devices.

Today, the Russian Defense Ministry also reported that a Ukrainian projectile hit the complex of the Zaporizhzhya NPP for the processing of solid radioactive waste and accused the Ukrainian authorities of wanting to disrupt the mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) at the ZNPP. Earlier, the press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov guaranteed the mission a safe stay on the territory of the ZNPP.

A delegation of 14 specialists led by the organization’s CEO Rafael Grossi has already arrived from Kyiv today in the Ukrainian-controlled city of Zaporozhye, AFP and Reuters reported. From there, she will head to the Russian-controlled territory of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, where she plans to spend “several days.” According to The Wall Street Journal, the trip will last from August 31 to September 3. Grossi also announced today that he plans to create a permanent mission of observers. Earlier, Mikhail Ulyanov, permanent representative of the Russian Federation to international organizations in Vienna, spoke about the possibility of leaving part of the specialists on the territory of the ZNPP on a permanent basis.

During a special military operation in Ukraine, the Russian military took control of part of the Zaporozhye region, including Energodar, where the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, the ZNPP, is located. At the same time, the Russian Ministry of Defense has repeatedly emphasized that it does not place weapons on the territory of the facility. The discussion of the visit of the IAEA mission to the station has been going on since the beginning of August, when shelling of nuclear power plants by Ukraine became more frequent.
