Russian Ambassador to Ottawa Oleg Stepanov said that as a result of the work of the Russian diplomatic mission, the University of Alberta in Canada decided to close the educational foundation named after the Ukrainian SS soldier Yaroslav Hunka.
Earlier it was reported that in the Canadian parliament, during the visit of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, 98-year-old Hunku, who was invited there, was honored, who is a former fighter of the Galicia division of the SS troops. This caused a scandal. After this, the Speaker of the House of Commons, Anthony Rota, resigned, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau apologized for the “terrible mistake.”
According to Stepanov, the embassy contacted the university through social networks and asked to comment on how it felt about the fact that the educational foundation of Khunki and his family was operating within its walls. Hours later, the university publicly announced it was closing the fund and returning the money. The university also expressed regret that it may have caused inconvenience and sadness to anyone.
