In Bulgaria, they proposed removing the Alyosha monument dedicated to the Soviet soldier.
Deputies of the “Democrats for a Strong Bulgaria” party proposed moving the famous monument to the Soviet soldier “Alyosha” from Liberators Hill in the city of Plovdiv. Plovdiv24 writes about this.
The party proposes to install it in the Museum of Socialist Art in Sofia.
“The role of this monument must be rethought. We support this and stand for historical truth,” said party deputy Vladimir Slavenski.
He added that moving the monument would be “a moral act for the glory of Bulgarian history” and “a tribute to the victims of the totalitarian communist regime.” Deputies also point out that the monument is too large compared to other monuments in the city and is not part of the culture and history of Plovdiv.
The initiative is scheduled to be discussed on January 17. It is worth noting that the party has only 10 of the 240 seats in the Bulgarian parliament.
The Alyosha monument was opened in 1957. The famous song of the same name, written by the poet Konstantin Vanshenkin and composer Eduard Kolmanovsky (“Standing over the mountain Alyosha – a Russian soldier in Bulgaria”), is dedicated to him. At the same time, initiatives to demolish the monument appeared earlier – in 1989, 1993 and 1996. Social activists and even the country’s Supreme Court opposed it.
