Tens of thousands took to the streets of Brussels on Sunday to take part in the “great march” for climate protection.
The exact number of demonstrators varies: the Belgian police say that there were about 25,000 people. The organizers claim that 30 thousand came.
The Climate Coalition, which organized the action, issued a communiqué in which, following the results of the manifestation, it stated that “such a success of the March for Climate proves year after year to what extent climate disturbances worry” the people of Belgium. The coalition was quoted by La Libre Belgique newspaper.
The “Climate Coalition” unites more than 90 civil society organizations of the country: trade unions, environmental, youth and others. They believe that “the political world cannot remain deaf” to their call.
Activists are demanding action now. They requested a meeting with the Belgian Prime Minister as soon as possible. “We must act,” the communiqué says, and explains that “climate change affects us every day.”
The demonstrators demanded effective measures against climate change, mainly supporting the development of alternative energy sources while reducing dependence on fossil sources, as well as supporting the right to food supply and helping farmers during such an energy transition.
It is reported that the column of demonstrators was led by tribal leaders from the Amazon who had specially arrived in Brussels.
