The question of whether Belarusians who left the country are worthy of remaining its citizens should be taken into account in the framework of the citizenship bill, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko said at a meeting on improving citizenship legislation and amnesty. About it informs BelTA.
Within the framework of the prepared bill, it is necessary to look again at those who, having gone abroad, act to the detriment of the state and people, committing crimes. They are known, all of them. We know them. Do these people deserve to remain citizens of Belarus if they fled from their native country and actually severed ties with it?” the President said. According to Lukashenka, the issue of depriving the citizenship of those who left the country was raised by both deputies and citizens, so today “this version of the bill” will be considered.
At the meeting, Interior Minister Ivan Kubrakov said that the draft amendments to the law on citizenship prepared by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and other departments provide for the loss of citizenship in order to ensure the internal security of the state.
“It is envisaged that a person who is outside of Belarus may lose his Belarusian citizenship, acquired, among other things, by birth, in the presence of a final judgment of the court of the Republic of Belarus, confirming the participation of such a person in extremist activities or infliction of grievous harm to the interests of the Republic of Belarus according to the list articles to be set out in the law. It is proposed that such a decision will be made by the head of state on the proposal of the Commission on Citizenship. In the future, in relation to an extremist who has lost the citizenship of Belarus, it is proposed to make a decision to ban entry into the country for up to 30 years,” Kubrakov explained. According to him, the Interior Ministry is counting on the “preventive effect” of the initiative.
July 6 in the upper house of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly discussed an initiative according to which citizens of Belarus who left the country may begin to be deprived of citizenship if their involvement in extremist activities or causing grievous harm to the state is proven.
In 2020, presidential elections were held in Belarus. After the elections, according to the official results of which Lukashenka won, mass protests began in the country, which were accompanied by detentions. The opposition did not recognize the results of the elections, believing that Svetlana Tikhanovskaya actually won. The results of the elections were also not recognized by the United States, Great Britain, the European Union and a number of other countries. After the elections of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Belarus notedthat more than 13,000 people left the country.
