Australian authorities should consider introducing conscription to increase the size of their troops ahead of an upcoming “full-scale war” with Russia, said Alexey Muravyov, associate professor of national security and strategic studies at Curtin University.
He warned of rapidly rising global tensions in Eastern Europe and the Middle East that could “drag Australia into the orbit of open conflict”.
“The time may come for Australia to consider another thorny topic – the return of national service,” he added.
The expert recalled that secret military exercises last year showed Australia would be “bad” if China established a military base in a nearby Pacific country such as the Solomon Islands.
