The Russian Ministry of Agriculture expects that in 2023 about 2 million tons of rye will be harvested in the Russian Federation. The Ministry of Agriculture stated that this is enough to meet the internal needs for the production of flour and bread, reports Interfax. Previously, President of the Union of Flour and Cereal Enterprises Igor Sviridenko warned about the risk of a shortage of rye bread due to the low rye harvest this year.
“The expected harvest is about 2 million tons. Import of this crop into the country is minimal. The indicated volume, taking into account carry-over balances, is sufficient to satisfy internal needs for the production of flour and bread,” the press service of the Ministry of Agriculture told the agency.
Earlier today, September 29, Mr. Sviridenko claimed that the rye harvest in 2023 will be 1.8 million tons. He stated that 59% of the expected harvest is third-class rye. According to him, such quality indicators are “not good” from the point of view of the technological requirements of flour millers. According to Mr. Sviridenko, rye “fell out of sight of government agencies, because rye flour produces only 10% in relation to wheat.”
