The number of closed commercial enterprises in 2023 decreased by 9.3% compared to 2022, FinExpertiza calculated based on Federal Tax Service data. In total, 254 thousand organizations stopped working last year, which was a record low over the past eight years. Analysts note that the decrease in “business mortality” is associated with the completion of the main stage of clearing the state register of fictitious companies.

From the FinExpertiza study it follows that companies opened more often than closed in about a third of Russian regions. A significant increase in enterprises was observed in 2023 in Moscow (+18.2 thousand), Moscow region (+4.8 thousand) and Leningrad region (+1.9 thousand). In total, at the end of last year, 242.5 thousand new commercial organizations were registered in Russia.

At the same time, as analysts note, in most regions of Russia, businesses were closed more often. The largest loss of companies occurred in St. Petersburg (-7.7 thousand), Samara region (-6.1 thousand) and Tatarstan (-3.3 thousand).

Among the 254 thousand commercial organizations that closed in 2023, the main part – 207.5 thousand (82%) were excluded from the Unified State Register of Legal Entities by decision of the Federal Tax Service, including due to signs of a fictitious business. 33.5 thousand (13.2%) enterprises were marked as inactive legal entities, 46.5 thousand companies (18.3%) were officially liquidated at the initiative of the founders.
