In 2023, EU countries intend to import record volumes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia, despite the bloc’s desire to abandon Russian fuel by 2027. Analysts of the non-governmental organization Global Witness came to this conclusion after analyzing Kpler data.
Based on the results of the first seven months of this year, China remains the leader in terms of Russian LNG imports, followed by Spain and Belgium. In total, according to the results of seven months, Russian LNG imports to the EU countries increased by 40% compared to the same period in 2021. According to analysts, the growth in volumes of LNG purchased from Russia was due to a “low base”. The EU did not import such significant volumes of LNG before the fighting in Ukraine, as it depended on pipeline gas from Russia.
Compared to 2022, the volume of Russian LNG imported by the EU in January-July increased by 1.7% year-on-year. The cost of seven-month deliveries is estimated at €5.29 billion. According to the report, most of the Russian LNG volumes come from the Yamal LNG plant, which is controlled by NOVATEK.
The EU has not yet imposed sanctions on Russian gas, both pipeline and LNG, unlike other fossil fuels from Russia. However, in the summer of 2022, the EU took a number of measures to limit dependence on Russian supplies. Through these measures, as well as through reduced industrial production and a warm EU winter managed to reduce total gas consumption by 17.7% from August 2022 to March 2023 compared to the average consumption in the same months of 2017-2022. By 2027, the European Union intends to completely abandon the import of Russian fossil fuels.
