Global demand for electricity will grow annually by 3% in 2023-2025, follows from report International Energy Agency (IEA). According to experts, in 2022 the demand for electricity increased by only 2% due to the energy crisis.
Growth dynamics will vary by region. China, which accounts for about 31% of global demand, is expected to grow by 5.2% between 2023 and 2025, India by 5.6% and Africa by 4.1%, according to the IEA. In Europe, electricity demand will increase by 1.4% in these years, and in the US by 1.2% in 2024 and 1.3% in 2025 after falling to 0.6% in 2023, analysts expect .
It follows from the materials of the report that in 2022 the demand for electricity was also differentiated by region. Electricity consumption rose strongly in India, while growth in China was not as significant due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A steady increase in growth was recorded in the US. In the European Union, demand fell due to warm weather during the winter and reduced electricity consumption in the industrial sector.
The share of renewable energy sources in total generation in 2025 will grow to 35% from 29% in 2022, analysts say. IEA experts predict that this will lead to a further reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.
Electricity consumption in Russia in 2022 increased by 1.5%. According to experts, demand could increase due to the launch of new enterprises in Siberia and the Far East, an increase in the load of the military-industrial complex and the supply of electricity to four new regions. However, the growth in electricity production was modest due to the halt in exports to the EU, and experts expect a fall in 2023, as supplies abroad may be the lowest in recent years.
