The Israel Defense Forces has published a list of the names of 26 soldiers killed during battles with militants of the Palestinian group Hamas on the border with the Gaza Strip. About it writes newspaper The Times of Israel.

26 soldiers have died in the past 24 hours since the Hamas movement attacked Israel on the morning of October 7. According to the IDF, their relatives have already been informed about the death of the soldiers.

Among the dead is the commander of the Israeli Nahal infantry brigade, Colonel Jonathan Steinberg. He was killed during clashes with militants near the border with the Gaza Strip, the Israel Defense Forces said. Steinberg was 42 years old. The Times of Israel, citing the military, also writes that the colonel was killed on the morning of October 7.

“Steinberg was on his way to a battle site led by his subordinates when he encountered the terrorist who killed him,” the newspaper reported.

The newspaper calls the infantry brigade commander one of the highest-ranking Israeli officers to die in combat in recent times.

Israel continues to defend itself against the Palestinian group Hamas, which attacked the country on the morning of October 7, launching, according to Israeli military estimates, about three thousand rockets. Israel has launched a counter-terrorism operation in the Gaza Strip. Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir declared a state of emergency in the country. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the first phase of the operation had been completed.
