IDC: Smartphone shipments last year were the worst since 2013

Global smartphone shipments in 2022 were 1.21 billion units, down 13% from 2021 and the lowest since 2013. Such data in report leads the analytical company IDC. At the same time, in the fourth quarter, usually the most successful for smartphone manufacturers due to the Christmas holidays, shipments fell by 18.3% compared to last year, to 300.3 million units.
Moreover, the result of the fourth quarter was worse than the third. “We have never seen holiday quarter deliveries lower than the previous quarter. However, weakening demand and high stock levels forced suppliers to cut shipments sharply,” said Nabila Popal, director of research at IDC, explaining the quarter results.
There were no changes in the “big three” smartphone manufacturers following the results of the reporting period, and it continues to control more than half of the global market. Apple remains the largest smartphone manufacturer. The American company shipped 72.3 million iPhones in the fourth quarter, down 14.9% from the last quarter of 2021. Apple’s market share for the quarter is 24.1%. In second place is Samsung with a market share of 19.4%. Deliveries of the South Korean manufacturer fell by 15.6%, to 58.2 million smartphones. Xiaomi Corporation closes the top three (11% of the market), which shipped 33 million smartphones in the fourth quarter, which is 26.3% less than at the end of 2021.
