The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has come up with a proposal to deploy permanent missions of nuclear safety experts at all Ukrainian nuclear power plants, including those in the Chernobyl nuclear power plant area, should from a statement on the organization’s website.

“The IAEA is preparing for the permanent deployment of missions at the Khmelnitsky, Rivne and South Ukrainian nuclear power plants, as well as at the Chernobyl site, which was announced last week by the IAEA Director General [Рафаэль] Grossi agreed with the Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal,” the statement said.

These missions are aimed at providing technical support to help maintain a high level of nuclear safety and reduce the risk of a nuclear incident or accident, the agency said.

Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, said the day before that the Ukrainian military shelled the territory of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant almost daily, and only the actions of Russian forces make it possible to keep the facility safe.

Energodar, as well as the ZNPP located in it, are regularly shelled by the Ukrainian army. Grossi called for an immediate halt to the shelling of the plant and stepped up contacts with the Russian and Ukrainian sides to agree on the creation of a safe zone around the ZNPP.
