IAEA approves release of water from Fukushima nuclear power plant into the ocean

On July 4, the United Nations International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) deemed safe plans by the operator of the Japanese nuclear power plant Fukushima-1, Tokyo Electric Power, to dump accumulated tritium-contaminated water into the Pacific Ocean. It was used to cool the power units of the nuclear power plant damaged by the earthquake and tsunami in 2011, it can no longer be stored at the plant site.
“Based on its comprehensive assessment, the IAEA has concluded that the chosen approach to release water <...> and Japan’s related activities are conducted in accordance with applicable international safety standards,” said IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi in the preface to the organization’s report. Grossi noted that discharges of treated water “would have a negligible radiative impact on the population and the environment.” The decision was made after two years of research by IAEA experts.
