The meeting between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad may take place in Russia through the mediation of Russian President Vladimir Putin. This variant of the development of events was not excluded by the columnist of the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet Abdulkadir Selvi.
“It is expected that the meeting between Erdogan and Assad will be hosted by the President of Russia,” the author noted.
Selvi added that Putin allegedly offered Erdogan and Assad to establish direct relations to resolve problems between Ankara and Damascus.
Today, November 23, Alexander Lavrentiev, Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation for Syria, during a press conference, said that the meeting between Erdogan and Assad would be symbolic and useful. In turn, the Turkish president also did not rule out that he might meet with his Syrian counterpart.
Earlier, Turkish aircraft launched airstrikes on Kurdish formations in the northern regions of Iraq and Syria. At the same time, Erdogan said that Ankara could launch a ground operation in Syria when it “deems it necessary.”
