Hungary wins gas price ceiling exemption

During the European Union (EU) summit in Brussels, Hungary ensured that if the proposals of the European Commission (EC) on the introduction of a price ceiling for Russian gas, as well as pan-European gas purchases, are accepted, then in this case an exception will be made for Budapest, since otherwise, the country may be left without fuel. This was announced by the Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orban.
“We agreed that even if a gas price ceiling is set in Europe, this will not affect long-term contracts, without which gas supplies to Hungary will become impossible from day to day,” Orban said.
He also explained that the country is exempted from the price ceiling for blue fuel. In this regard, nothing threatens Hungary’s gas supply.
In addition, Orban stressed that a number of countries agreed with Hungary’s position, as a result of which it was possible to “prevent the threat” of cutting off gas supplies from Russia.
