The European Union is putting political pressure on Hungary, trying to prevent its contacts with Russia. This statement was made on Wednesday, November 22, by the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Economic Relations Peter Szijjártó.
According to the politician, Brussels is trying, with the help of financial sanctions, to change Budapest’s independent position on this and other issues, but this indicates a democratic deficit in the European Union.
Szijjártó stressed that as soon as he starts talking about the importance of maintaining communication channels with Moscow in order to achieve peace in Ukraine, the EU immediately “portrays him as a puppet of the Russians, an ally of Putin or a propagandist of the Kremlin.”
Earlier, European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson said that the Hungarian authorities should intensify efforts to stop purchasing energy from Russiasince “it is clearly not in Hungary’s interests to continue this dependence.”
Meanwhile, Hungary and Russia signed a construction plan and schedule the fifth and sixth units of the Paks-2 nuclear power plant. Connection of new units is scheduled for the early 2030s.
