Hungary announced the delivery of the third batch of nuclear fuel from Russia

The third batch of nuclear fuel in 2023 was delivered to Hungary from Russia, bypassing the territory of Ukraine, said the Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Economic Relations of Hungary, Peter Szijjártó.

The Republic received fuel from Rosatom for the Paks nuclear power plant on the banks of the Danube along the route through Bulgaria and Romania, as a result of which a fuel reserve was created for “a fairly long period,” the minister said.

In a video message on his Facebook page (owned by the Meta corporation, which is recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation), Szijjártó said that the supply of fuel elements was carried out on a ship across the Black Sea to the Bulgarian port of Varna, and then the fuel was transported by rail through Bulgaria and Romania to Hungary . Fuel supplies will continue in accordance with the contract between a division of the Hungarian company MVM and Rosatom.

In his address, Szijjártó pointed out the high quality of Russian nuclear fuel and strict adherence to delivery deadlines.

“And if I understand correctly, other countries of Central Europe, despite persistent entreaties from the West, also continue to work with the Russian fuel supplier,” – said he (quote from TASS).

The minister added that in the field of nuclear energy “there is no place for politics, geopolitics, or sanctions.”

Currently, at the nuclear power plant in the city of Paks, built using Soviet technology on the banks of the Danube near Budapest, there are four power units with VVER-440 reactors. The station generates approximately half of the country’s electricity production, providing about a third of consumption, and receives nuclear fuel from Russia. After the commissioning of the new two units, the station’s capacity will increase from the current 2000 MW to 4400 MW.

Earlier, Telex reported, with reference to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, about the republic’s plans to convert the nuclear power plant in the city of Paks to French nuclear fuel instead of Russian.
