Hublot surprises with a carbon rainbow – News – Style – Kommersant

Usually the name Rainbow, “rainbow” is worn by watches with a dial rim encrusted with multi-colored sapphires and other precious stones, selected according to a color gradient. Hublot also has such versions, and in cases made of a variety of materials: steel, titanium, gold and even sapphire glass. But never before have watchmakers tried to reproduce the effect of the iridescent glow of colored stones on the surface of a composite carbon case.

Thin strips of carbon fiber are stacked a few millimeters apart. Then strips of colored composite are inserted vertically into the gaps, which protrude slightly from the carbon, and the height difference is filled with a carbon mesh that raises all components to the same level. The challenge was to place each element in a specific location so that the 3D structure would be invisible to the naked eye, and create

smooth and polished to the touch surface of the watch case. Each inlay is discreetly cut, polished and fitted to micron precision. Never before has a watch been able to boast so many shades created by a color composite. A multicolor alligator leather strap maintains the rainbow theme set by the case.

The innovative corpus required non-trivial content. Therefore, in the MP-09 (MP stands for Masterpiece, “masterpiece”) Tourbillon Bi-Axis 5-Day Power Reserve, it was decided to use a movement with manual winding, a biaxial tourbillon (with one full revolution per minute on the first axis and a revolution of 30 seconds on second axle) and a 120-hour power reserve. The fascinating double rotation of the tourbillon cages at 6 o’clock forms the basis for the unusual arched design of the 49 mm case with curved edges.

The novelty, first presented at the Hublot Loves Art event, timed to coincide with the Art Basel Miami exhibition held in Miami, will be released in just 8 copies at a price of 200,000 Swiss francs each.
