HSE: the number of poor and wealthy people is decreasing in Russia

In 2022, 25% of Russians surveyed spent the bulk of their income on food, report “News” with reference to a study by the Center for Civil Society and Nonprofit Studies at the Higher School of Economics (HSE).
At the same time, the authors of the study indicate that in comparison with previous years, these figures have decreased. If now 10% said that they spend all their money on food, and 15% that they spend two thirds of their income, then in 2021 these figures were 11% and 20%, respectively.
The HSE study also states that in 2022, 17% of Russians experienced a shortage of funds for food, clothing or shoes. In addition, 4% of this share reported that they do not even have enough money for food, and 13% that they only have the opportunity to buy food, but not clothes or shoes.
However, against the background of poverty reduction, another trend is noticeable. So in four years, the rate of those who can buy real estate has decreased – from 6% in 2019 to 5% in 2022. And the share of those who cannot afford to buy a car has risen from 20% in 2019 to 25% in 2022.
Earlier study results “infom”commissioned by the Central Bank showed that the main strategy of Russians is to buy cheaper goods. Over the past two years, on average, every fourth respondent has resorted to it. In January 2023, they began to save 23% on products, and the peak values were recorded in April-June last year (28-31% of respondents). In second place is a similar strategy – to buy less often or completely refuse some goods and services. Over the past two years, on average, every fifth person has done this, in January 2023 – 16% of respondents.
