According to a survey by the Vyberu.ru company, 3/4 of respondents encountered scammers on the eve of March 8, Izvestia writes. Most often, Russians come across fake websites of gift shops and large marketplaces; they also spoofed the pages of flower delivery services. Survey participants also complained that they received messages about promotions and sweepstakes on social networks.
Recently, the focus of attackers has shifted to popular instant messengers, said Cyberok CEO Sergei Gordeychik: “Any major event, it could be a holiday or some kind of public event, is used by scammers to make a profit. It is not at all surprising that an event such as March 8 ends up in the same category.
A common approach is the use of various pseudo-discounts or mimicry of some well-known sites with special offers, because a person is in any case looking for something interesting at this time.
If earlier the main mechanism was email, now Telegram is very often used as the most common messenger. Those who have accounts opened for external contacts are sent various offers, messages about discounts and opportunities to visit the site.”
Since the beginning of the month, experts have recorded three dozen fake resources offering gift cards for March 8 from various marketplaces. There are several ways to identify scammers in such cases, explained Luka Safonov, general director of the Cyberpolygon company: “A wild rush of prices is created, which in some places are then reduced supposedly for a promotion, in others not. Demand for a certain group of goods is also being formed, for example, flowers or gifts related to beauty and care for women.
The pursuit of freebies during the holidays usually leads to negative results. That is, if the price is clearly below the market median, then these are most likely scammers: in the end you will either receive nothing or receive some low-quality product that does not meet the stated characteristics.
Since you have been lured somewhere, then, first of all, look around, see how long ago this store was created; through whois services, for example, you can also check the age of the domain.
If it is less than a few years old, then it is probably a scam. You can look at working and non-working forums, and look up information about the legal status of the person who launched this site.
In addition, if this is an advertisement, then now each video, each such message must be marked with a mandatory identifier. You can use it to check whether the product and the advertiser correspond to what is indicated in it. And, of course, you should use your head: for example, flowers on a holiday cannot cost three times cheaper than elsewhere. This doesn’t happen.”
Cybersecurity experts also warn that scammers are increasingly faking video messages on Telegram in order to scam people out of money. Using neural networks, they generate a picture, a voice and, under the guise of relatives or colleagues, ask for money.
