Some categories of goods will increase in price by 10-15%

The dollar exchange rate on the Moscow Exchange for the first time in more than a year exceeded 90 rubles. So far, it is difficult to talk about the reaction of prices to exchange rate volatility. But the fact is that in almost any Russian production there is a dependence on materials, components and raw materials that are purchased outside the country. And this applies even to such areas as the agro-industrial complex, where, for example, seed, pesticides, various feed additives for livestock rearing, etc. are imported. An increase in the value of the dollar is usually reflected in final retail prices over time. Therefore, it is probably not worth waiting for an instant increase in the cost of anything, except for those product groups that are direct imports: cars, electronics, household appliances, gadgets.

According to Ivan Samoylenko, managing partner of the B&C Agency, the dollar growth in Russia will quickly affect only direct imports, and then, after a couple of months, it will affect the prices of other goods – daily demand and food. Because the production lines in our country also use mainly imported production lines, a large list of necessary items is imported (from packaging to food coloring).

“We should also note the fact of mass import substitution in the last year, as Western companies left Russia. This will smooth out the effect of rising prices, but the process will be lengthy, as stated by the producers themselves and various ministries,” he said.

Those goods that were already in stock and in stock are unlikely to rise in price significantly, says Anastasia Chumak, specialist at Intercession law firm. However, if the rate continues to stay at such levels and further, then exports will inevitably rise in price.

“Rise in prices will affect electronics, household appliances, cars imported through parallel imports and other goods,” she continues. – At the moment, for goods that are imported “on order” for parallel imports, there will be a rise in price of 10-15%. What is already in stock should not rise in price. Especially in the low price segment, since the seller there is corny limited by the purchasing power of the population.

According to Chumak, neither the seller nor the buyer is interested in raising prices now. Much will depend on what the course will be in the future.

“If it remains at the same level of 90 rubles per dollar, then some categories of goods will rise in price by 10-15% – this is the middle and high price segment. The rise in prices for budget goods will not exceed 5-8%,” the expert concludes.

The ongoing weakening of the ruble can be attributed to the absence of a strong ruble policy for three decades, emphasizes Andrei Loboda, economist, director of communications at BitRiver.

“Very mysterious things are happening today. Since the beginning of the year, the ruble has lost almost 30% of its value against the dollar and the euro, but the price increase does not exceed 3%, and prices for many products are falling. Previously, the devaluation of the ruble by 10% accelerated prices in the consumer market by almost 15%, he says. “Prices for medical equipment, pharmaceuticals and imported equipment imported for Russian enterprises will react very sensitively.”
