State Duma deputy Sergei Sokol from United Russia Sergei Sokol withdrew his candidacy from the election of the head of Khakassia. Earlier it was reported that on August 31, Sokol was hospitalized in Moscow with venous mesenteric thrombosis and acute intestinal obstruction.
In his telegram channel, the deputy said that in such a situation he would not be able to “devote himself with full dedication to the struggle for the governor’s post.” He added that doctors strongly discourage him from leaving the hospital bed, so as not to cause serious complications. After recovery, he intends to stay in Khakassia and head the regional branch of the party.
“Being a governor is a serious and responsible job, when you can’t fail even for a day,” Sokol said. “I made a difficult but honest decision.”
Sokol’s rival in the upcoming elections was the current head of the region, communist Valentin Konovalov.
