The US is afraid of Chinese cyber attacks on its bases in Asia
Successful cyberattacks on critical infrastructure on the island of Guam or other footholds in the Indo-Pacific region could undermine US military capabilities in the region, said General Paul Nakasone, head of the National Security Agency and US Cyber Command. His words are quoted by the Sea Power Magazine website.
Nakasone spoke at a hearing held by the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party.
Nakasone said successful cyberattacks on networks that provide power, water and food supplies to Guam could have a very significant impact on the capabilities available to the US military in the region.
The island of Guam is a key outpost for American forces in the Asia-Pacific region, a center for logistics, supply and intelligence.
