Head of the European Committee for NATO Enlargement invited Armenia to join the alliance

Head of the European Committee for NATO Enlargement Günter Fehlinger appealed to Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to join the North Atlantic Alliance. He stated this in his account in X (formerly Twitter).

“I call on Armenia to join NATO,” he wrote.

There are regular clashes on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan. In particular, on September 2, the Ministry of Defense of Armenia accused the Azerbaijani side in shelling the positions of the Armenian army. Azerbaijan denied this information.

On May 25, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, through the mediation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, discussed relations between the two countries in the Kremlin, but did not adopt a joint statement at the end of the day. At the same time, as Aliyev noted, after Armenia’s statements on the recognition of the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, the issue of agreeing on the points of the peace treaty will go “much easier.” At the same time, Pashinyan stated that Yerevan would recognize the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.

The aggravation of the situation around Nagorno-Karabakh has been dragging on since September 2020, when hostilities began in the region between the military of Armenia and Azerbaijan. As a result, a tripartite statement was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. Hostilities have completely ceased in the conflict zone, and Russian peacekeepers have also been deployed along the line of contact and in the Lachin corridor.

The situation around Nagorno-Karabakh worsened again in 2022, when the State Border Guard Service of Azerbaijan installed a checkpoint in the Lachin corridor, on the only road connecting Nagorno-Karabakh with Armenia. In mid-July, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced its readiness to organize a trilateral meeting of foreign ministers in Moscow in the near future to discuss ways to implement the agreements between Armenia and Azerbaijan at the highest level, including the topic of agreeing on a peace treaty.
